North Shore

Auckland’s North Shore is a relatively affluent area of New Zealand’s largest city. Until the Auckland region’s reorganisation in 2010, the district was governed by its own body, the North Shore City Council, and was the fourth most populous city in the country.

The North Shore is linked to the rest of the metropolis by two harbour bridges – Auckland Harbour Bridge joins the North Shore with Auckland City, spanning the inner Waitemata Harbour, and the Upper harbour crosses the northern span of the harbour to connect with Waitakere and Auckland’s western suburbs. The Auckland Harbour Bridge suffers severe traffic congestion, making commuting to the city frustrating and difficult. Public transport was upgraded to provide park and ride options to the city in an effort to reduce car dependence, with modest effect. A number of suburbs also offer ferry services, with more planned.

Despite the traffic troubles, the North Shore is still a sought-after location to live, work and play. Sections of the North Shore can lay claim to the highest property prices in New Zealand; in particular, a stretch of the coast running north from Takapuna Beach to Milford is known as ‘the Golden Mile’, and many properties in this area have sold for several million dollars or more – one beachfront property sold in 2005 for an astounding $12.8 million.

The suburb of Devonport is home to the Royal New Zealand Navy’s Devonport Naval Base and the Devonport Yacht Club. Sailing and military history feature strongly in the local character. Devonport is a popular dining destination and attracts visitors with its heritage appeal, shopping and fine hospitality; visitors travel from Auckland on the ferry to dine and browse, then enjoy the evening return trip with beautiful views of Auckland. Devonport is notable also as home to two of New Zealand’s best known young female musicians, Gin Wigmore and Lorde.

The suburb of Albany, once a quiet rural suburb, has recently experience a period of tremendous growth. Now the commercial hub of the North Shore, Albany has attracted numerous retailers who have built or plan to build large-scale ‘superstores’, anticipating continued commercial and residential growth. Recent construction has also focussed on cheaper housing, turning thousands of acres of farmland to residential use. Albany is home to North Harbour Stadium, the home ground of the North Harbour ITM Cup rugby team.

The North Shore continues to grow and its residential area sprawls ever northward. Orewa, a popular coastal holiday town 40km north of Auckland city, is now connected to the city by the northern motorway and property values have skyrocketed as it has become a feasible commuter town. The North Shore and northern Auckland region encompass many picturesque suburbs, towns and villages that provide a welcome and easily accessible getaway for city dwellers seeking a change of scene.

Great feedback for Total Roofing

"We used Total Roofing for the first time three years ago on the Frucor head office project. It was a total refurbishment of a huge building, with replacement of a 15 by 180 metre roof area. The whole project was worth about $9 million. It was a tough job, with removal of asbestos sheeting which had to be specially handled, bagged, and craned down. There was replacement of the roofing, wall cladding and spouting. Frucor staff were still occupying the factory below and we were working on refurbishment of the office with other subtrades. There were a few teething problems, as there are on all big jobs, but we sorted out a way forward and Total Roofing were great. I would definitely use them again." - Ryan
